Topic Description and Speaker Bios:
The new Tacoma Narrows Bridge is the largest suspension bridge in the world currently under construction and the fifth largest suspension bridge in the United States. The construction of this $849 million design -build project ($800 million of which will be paid by tolls) will take approximately 5.5 years to complete. This project is currently over 80% complete and will have the new bridge open to traffic in 2007 and upgrades to the existing bridge completed in 2008. Come join us to hear about the challenges overcome by the Tacoma Narrows Bridge design-build team. Our speakers will go over some of the major elements of the new and existing bridges and present a slide show of photos highlighting the challenges in the design and construction of these signature bridges.
Tom Schnetzer is a project manager for the HNTB Corporation and is the Task Force Lead responsible for the modification and seismic upgrade of the existing Tacoma Narrows Bridge. He has a BSCE in Civil Engineering and has spent a majority of his career designing and managing bridge projects. In his role as the Tacoma Narrows Existing Bridge Task Force Lead, Tom's responsibilities include modifying the bridge deck, replacing the existing curb with a crash-tested traffic railing, performing the seismic upgrade of the existing suspension bridge and adjoining approach structures, and performing the structural evaluation and wind-testing of the modified bridge. In addition to his ongoing work on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Tom is also the Structures Discipline Lead for the I-405 Congestion Relief and Bus Rapid Transit Projects.
Jeff Lavinder is a Senior Project Engineer for Parsons Transporation Group working as the senior on-site engineer and Quality Assurance manager for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Project. He has been on the project since the contractor was given Notice to Proceed (NTP) in October 2002. He led the wall design team and coordinated all other design aspects between the design offices and construction. Construction responsibilities include lead for Engineering Support During Construction (ESDC Manager), Construction Quality Assurance Manager, and Lead Resident Engineer.
