JUNE TOPIC: "Electric Vehicles"
June's Luncheon will involve presentations from a panel of three, with time for questions and answers. Our speakers: Frank Castro, Utilities Fleet Manager, Tacoma Public Utilities; Toni Rice, Professional Engineer, Plant Engineering, Tacoma Public Utilities; and David Kaplan, Chief Technology Officer and Founder, V2Green, Inc.
Frank Castro will cover the differences between a hybrid electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. He will also identify the objectives of Tacoma Public Utilities' PHEV Program.
Toni Rice will focus on the Tacoma Public Utilities PHEV electrical supply design and installation and will cover: The electrical supply requested, What the National Electric Code allows, What was installed, and Cost.
Dave Kaplan will describe technology and market prospects for smart charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services based on plug-in vehicles. Such technologies allow utilities to manage the flow of electricity to and from vehicles within parameters set by vehicle owners, minimizing grid stress and enabling more effective integration of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, into the grid.
SPEAKER BIOS:
Frank Castro, CAFM
A 28 year City of Tacoma employee, Frank Castro is the Fleet Manager for Tacoma Public Utilities. Tacoma Public Utilities, Fleet Services group is part of Tacoma Power's Transmission and Distribution Services Section. The Fleet Services group provides vehicle and equipment support to all Tacoma Public Utilities Departments including Tacoma Rail, Tacoma Water and Tacoma Power. He is responsible for the acquisition, disposal, maintenance and repair of over 1100 vehicles and pieces of equipment.

Toni Rice, PE
Toni is a registered professional engineer (PE) in electrical engineering and a registered lighting certified (LC) lighting designer.
Twenty-five years ago, Toni started working part-time at Tacoma Public Utilities as an engineering technician, while pursuing an engineering degree. In 1986 she graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and returned as a full-time engineer in the Systems Engineering Relay and Controls Group.
In the early 1990s, when TPU, along with the rest of the business world, down-sized, right-sized, searched for excellence, and reorganized, Toni joined the newly formed Plant Engineering Group within Tacoma Power. She works with the design and construction team on new and remodel building projects. She has designed lighting, power, surveillance, and fire systems for the TPU campus as well as other facilities. Since Tacoma Power enforces NEC Code compliance and promotes energy efficiency, sustainable and reliable electrical design has been Toni's priority long before sustainable design became the trend.
Toni is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Illuninating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), and International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI).
David Kaplan, Chief Technology Officer & Founder V2Green
David co-founded V2Green in 2006 to help enable electric transportation, bringing to the clean energy field over 25 years of technology experience at companies such as Microsoft and Impinj. V2Green's load management technology can be used to deliver energy cost-savings and lower vehicle ownership costs, and is being deployed in field trials by Xcel Energy, Austin Energy, Seattle City Light and other leading U.S. energy companies.
